Usually bands with a long career like NECRONOMICON most they can do is to release a mediocre album that will give them the chance to tour or play some live shows.
For the speed/thrash metallers NECRONOMICON who started their career back in the 80’s things are not at all as I described above. I think that the band are going through a second youth which combined with the maturity they have as musicians can give us great albums like “Invictus”. This new release of theirs has interesting ideas (they even use a violin in the song “Before the Curtain Falls”) and above all variety. I liked and enjoyed very much the way that the band combines heavy, speed and thrash metal elements in their sound. For some strange reason this album brought to my mind ANNIHILATOR of the “Carnival Diablos” era (by the way Randy Black (ex – ANNIHILATOR) does a guest appearance on the album). I don’t mean that they copy the above mentioned band, since they have their own musical identity. To cut a long story short, NECRONOMICON strike back with a thrash metal album that not only the fans of the band and the genre will love, but it will also appeal to fans of other genres, since it has passion, dynamic rhythm sections and great melodies. I believe that NECRONOMICON along with ARTILLERY are the bands that still manage to impress me and sound fresh, although they have a career that started back in the 80’s. A must have…
